Understanding streaming

Streaming generally is a method for intelligent broadcasting of data on the Internet. It differs from conventional downloading as it isnít necessary to wait for the end of the process in order to be able to start playing back the data.

It is important to grasp this difference as it is the whole point of broadcasting in real time since it allows not inconsiderable bandwidth to be saved resulting in less costs for the traffic generated.

Different types of streaming

Live video streaming that allows you to broadcast contents coming from a live source.

Progressive downloading (or false streaming) allows you to play the contents available on a server on the web without waiting for all the data to be sent. This type of streaming has been feasible for a long time with our shared hosting service or for more professional use with our VOD product. In this case, you wonít need the Live Video Streaming service to broadcast a film or contents that wouldnít be produced live.

Quality and streaming formats

You can send your video streams in different formats, specifically H.264 and VP6. The video may contain audio tracks in the more current formats AAC HE(AAC+), AAC, MP3. These audio and video codecs will then be encapsulated and offered for broadcasting on your admin console in different formats like .FLV, .M3u8, RTMP, and also to play back from your web page using our customizable flash player.

Your internet connection

The video flux that will be sent to us via your Internet connection will depend on your bandwidth availability for sending data (upload); if for example you have 650 kb/s for upload, you will be limited to a video stream of 600Kb/s maximum. If you send an attachment of 10MB by email using the same Internet connection, this may saturate your upload line and cut your stream for several seconds.

Connection quality on client side

It is far less complicated, as bandwidth use is done in reverse this time; the customer receives your video stream as a download. ADSL connections are generally very fast for downloads (several megabytes/sec). However there are still some urban areas that have a slower throughput. If you donít want to punish this audience, you ought to create a second live video stream of lower quality.

Functionalities

Compatibility for all support

Among the current compatible methods of listening, we can mention the iPod, iPhone, iPad, smartphones under Android and Windows Mobile, iTunes, QuickTime, Windows Media Player, Winamp, Internet browsers like Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari etc...

Robustness

With video streaming, your live video streams have a more or less unlimited space for broadcasting for overall viewing that was previously impossible. With Infomaniak they will also benefit from unrivalled broadcasting quality.

High-capacity connection

The servers managing video streaming are in our datacentre in Carouge, linked by 2 20 GB dark fibres each, allowing peak traffic of up to 40 GB per second.

Servers in load balancing

For unlimited broadcasting, even when there are major peaks in audiences, we provide twenty servers in load balancing, dedicated to receiving and broadcasting streams.

Incoming servers

2 servers (live broadcasters) of which 1 reserve using WOWZA technology guaranteeing both fail-over (in case of a fault) for the live broadcasters and and load balancing for live reflectors.

Distribution servers

10 WOWZA servers in N+1 cluster for broadcasting streams on the client side. These distribute the listeners for different streamings. We have installed resistant routing to eliminate any risks of network attacks using special configuration.

Calculate your requirements

In order to broadcast your streams, we need to be able to distribute your unique stream to several people at the same time.

calc In order to do this, you need to estimate the number of visitors (our offer starts at 500 simultaneous viewers up to 20,000 viewers) or estimate the required bandwidth. This will determine the rates for the offer that you think best.
